I first attended Camp Susque in the summer of 2004. My parents drove my sister and I six hundredmiles from Charlotte, NC to Trout Run, PA. At first I was terrified to be so far from home and in a new place, but as the week of camp went on I grew to love the place.
I ended up being a camper for five summers and then in 2010 applied to be a summer staff member. I have worked as a summer staffer every summer since then.
I am constantly amazed at how the Lord works in and through Camp Susque. I have seen campers grow in their knowledge of their Creator while making loads of new friends in a week of summer camp. I have heard the rich sound of the summer staff worshipping together. I have smelled camp fires where testimonies have been shared and s’mores enjoyed. I have learned from the example of senior staff members and made friendships that will last a lifetime. I have been challenged in ways that I never could have imagined, and relied on God because I knew that I could not make it on my own.
My first summer on staff someone referred to camp as “a glimpse of what heaven will be like.” They did not mean that camp was perfect, but instead that camp is a place where you can grow in a Christian community. Both campers and staff members have the chance to learn more about and worship their Creator during their time on camp. This is why I love and support the ministry of Camp Susque. I have seen so many lives changed (including my own) through Camp’s ministry.
